QA Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF)

Course Aim

Our qualification aims to benefit learners by enabling them to attain the knowledge and practical competencies needed to deal with a range of first aid situations and/or take on the role of a first-aider in the workplace.

The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require all employers to make arrangements to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. This includes carrying out a risk assessment, appointing a suitable amount of first aiders and providing appropriate first aid training.

The QA Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) qualification is designed for learners who wish to act as a first aider in the workplace. Successful learners will learn how to manage a range of injuries and illnesses that could occur at work and will be equipped with the essential skills needed to give emergency first aid.

What’s more as a regulated qualification, employers can book this course for their employees and rest assured that they have fulfilled their legal responsibilities for providing quality first aid training, without having to undertake any lengthy due diligence checks.

Who is this course for?

This qualification is for people who deal with first aid at work, enabling them to be a workplace first-aider under the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981, it should be seen as the start of a training cycle that ensures a high level of competence throughout the life of the resulting certificate. The Health and Safety Executive recommends annual refresher training to maintain their vital lifesaving skills.

Qualification Contact Teaching Hours

18 hours minimum.

  • Assessing an incident,

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and defibrillation,
  • Recovery Position,
  • Heart attack,
  • Stroke,
  • Choking,
  • Epilepsy,
  • Asthma,
  • Diabetes,
  • Anaphylaxis,
  • Shock,
  • Head and spinal injuries,
  • Chest injuries,
  • Wounds and bleeding,
  • Fractures,
  • Sprains, strains, and dislocations,
  • Minor injuries,
  • Burns and scalds,
  • Poisoning,
  • Eye injuries.

Practical Assessment

During this qualification, learners are assessed by their trainer across 6 different first aid competencies as follows:

  • Care of the Unconscious Casualty,
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation,
  • Management of a choking casualty,
  • Wounds, Bleeding and Shock,
  • Secondary Survey,
  • Management of Fractures.

Theory Assessment

At the end of the first and last day of teaching, there are multiple-choice papers for each learner to sit.

Successful completion of both of these question papers and practical assessments are required to successfully complete the qualification.

QA Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)

Course Aim

Practical Assessment

During this qualification, learners are assessed by their trainer across 4 different first aid competencies as follows:

  • Care of the Unconscious Casualty,
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation,
  • Management of a choking casualty,
  • Wounds, Bleeding and Shock.

Theory Assessment

At the end of the qualification, there is a multiple-choice paper for each learner to sit.

Successful completion of both the question paper and practical assessments are required to successfully complete the qualification.

Course Certification & Renewal

Successful learners will receive a Qualsafe Awards certificate, valid for a period of 3 years from the date of successful completion.

The requirement of the Health and Safety Executive is that this certificate is renewed before the certificate expiry date to remain a qualified first aider in the workplace.
