We wanted to share with you some of the fantastic things that have happened here at Key Performance Training in May.

Training highlights

We have been able to work with four new companies this month, helping them with a variety of courses, so we’re delighted to be able to help them achieve compliance and we look forward to working with them again in the near future.

We’ve run 16 courses this month and we’ve helped 24 people achieve their training goals.  One of the highlights was our first Mental Health First Aid Course.  We ran this in support of the UK Mental Health Foundation, and we donated 10% of our course fees to them, as well as provided our trained delegates with a green pin badge, which is the symbol of the charity.  We are planning on running our open course at least once a month, as we see Mental Health training becoming more in demand with employers; especially if training is made mandatory by the Government.

Our general manager, Rachel Gearon, attended our Emergency First Aid at Work course this month as well, ensuring our own certification has been renewed and is up to date.

Events

We’ve joined Grafters, a networking group for people wo work with the construction industry.  We will be planning an event with them in July, so their members can come along and have a go on a forklift truck.

We’ve also joined the South West Growth Hub team and attended an initial 1-2-1 meeting.  We’re going to attend their next networking meeting in Chippenham at the end of June, so we’re really looking forward to meeting some of the members face to face.

We were also delighted to attend the Swindon Business Expo on 18th May at Swindon Double Tree, Hilton Hotel.  We met lots of great people and were also able to make some new and potentially exciting contacts there.

Personal news

On a personal note, our trainer Darren Radford also had a huge highlight this month, as he got married to the wonderful Mandy. We were there to celebrate alongside them, and we all had a fabulous time.  We wish them a very long and happy life together.

All in all, it’s been a busy and rewarding month, and we’re looking forward to June being as productive.

News from the HSE

The HSE has fined a company in Birmingham £600,000 after a worker’s leg crushed by a forklift truck.

The man was working for AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings Limited when the incident occurred at the firm’s Birmingham site on Bordesley Green Road on 8 May 2018.

He had been walking across a pedestrian crossing at the site when a forklift truck, being driven by another worker, collided with him, crushing his leg and ankle. The driver did not slow down while approaching the pedestrian crossing and his vision was restricted as the forklift truck was carrying multiple intermediate bulk containers (IBCs).

The injured worker required surgery and skin grafts following the incident.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation into the incident found AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings Limited failed to provide an adequate risk assessment nor a safe system of work. There was also a lack of appropriate supervision. This led to the adoption and development of an unsafe custom and practice on site.

AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings Limited, of Wexham Road, Slough, Berkshire, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The company was fined £600,000 and ordered to pay costs of £3,188.60 at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on 3 April 2023.

HSE inspector Marie Wheeler said: “This incident could so easily have been avoided by the employer adequately assessing the risks and ensuring a suitable workplace transport system was implemented with correct management and supervision in place.

“Companies should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action against those that fall below the required standards.”

If you are operating a forklift truck, you need to be aware of the dangers and be adequately trained on how to operate them safely.  This includes observing your environment, including pedestrians.

Supervisors and managers also need to be aware of the dangers involved their operation and put adequate measures in place to protect their staff and visitors.

We offer a range of RTITB forklift operator training, as well as an online forklift manager course (Managing & Supervising Materials Handling Equipment Operations), so we can help you remain compliant with the law, and help you ensure your staff are protected from unnecessary and avoidable risks.

Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid

We’re proud to be supporting National Mental Health Awareness Week, which runs from 15th May – 21st May 2023.  This annual event organised by the Mental Health Foundation (the UK’s leading charity on mental health), aims to raise awareness and encourage us all to talk about our mental health.

Our mental health impacts every part of our lives, and therefore naturally impacts us both at home and at work. Did you know:

  • 25% of people have left their job due to Mental Health issues
  • 68% of people feel that their employer should be doing more to address Mental Health issues at work
  • 40% of people have taken a day or longer off work due to Mental Health issues
  • 20% of people say that their company has a Mental Health wellbeing policy that they know about
  • 25% of people feel their workplace is contributing negatively to their mental wellbeing

One in four of us will experience a mental illness in their lifetime, so this is happening all around us.  Would you be able to spot the signs of someone close to you if they were struggling?  Would you know what to do to support them?

We’re running a one-day Mental Health First Aid course on Wednesday 24th May which will teach you just that.  It is designed to help employers provide a positive culture within the workplace and to provide learners with the knowledge to both identify and act on mental health conditions, should they be suspected.

On successful completion of this course, you will receive a Level 2 (RQF) First Aid for Mental Health at Work Certificate, which is valid for three years. This course is Regulated by Ofqual under their Regulated Quality Framework (RQF) and accredited by the FAA.

For every booking on the course, we’ll donate 10% of the booking value to the Mental Health Foundation, and each successful learner will also get a Mental Health Foundation green ribbon pin badge.
