Are you confident that your PUWER responsibilities are covered?

Are you confident that your PUWER responsibilities are covered?

Are you confident that your PUWER responsibilties are covered?

When a material handling equipment incident happens, often it’s operators that are held to account, with poor training taking the blame. However, incidents often occur as a result of poor supervision and management, so to reduce risks, those in these senior roles need to be correctly trained too.

That is why it is a legal requirement under The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) that managers and supervisors of material handling equipment are adequately trained.

First Aid Icon

If you have these responsibilities, then we have a great solution available that’s quick, convenient and affordable to ensure your legal responsibilities are covered.

The RTITB Managing and Supervising MHE Operations eLearning course is a fantastic course for anyone looking to develop into a managerial or supervisory role within an MHE environment, and for those already in the role looking to improve their understanding of their duties.  It can be completed in a day, accessed on mobile devices, and will ensure you and your business are safe and compliant.

Managers and Supervisors will feel confident of their abilities within hours of successfully completing this online training, expertly developed and frequently updated.

Broken down into 6 sections, staff can spread the training over several days, thus assisting warehouse managers and site managers minimise the delays or disruptions to your operation.

At the end of the course content (approximately 3 – 4 hours), there is an end of course assessment, and upon successful completion of the eLearning, candidates will receive a verified qualification.

All of this for under £65 plus VAT per person, with discounts available for over 20 people, thus making this great value for money.

International Women’s Day

Friday 8th March 2024

It’s International Women’s Day on Friday 8th March, so we wanted to do something to celebrate this great event.

There is still a huge demand for forklift drivers at the moment, and we’ve previously talked about the advantages to everyone in Logistics and Supply Chains if we can encourage more women into these roles – see our blog

First Aid Icon

Therefore, to support this effort, we’re hosting our next Forklift Friday on the same day – open to Ladies Only.

This will be an opportunity to speak to a trainer, discuss any requirements they might have, and to try forklift driving – completely free and with no obligation.

Our hope is that once our ladies have discovered the joy of driving a forklift, they will be encouraged to try it as a career.

So with that in mind, any woman who attends will be offered a 20% discount off our normal forklift course prices!*

For more information about Forklift Friday and how this can help you on the next step in your career, please see here

*T&C’s apply – contact us for full details.

Why Logistics and Supply Chain need more women

Why Logistics and Supply Chain need more women

Perception is changing but nationally women are still hugely under-represented within the logistics and supply chain sectors, a situation that some businesses and organisations are working hard to change.

Women only represent around 7% of the logistics sector workforce which employs over 2 million people, and generated £139 billion in 2019, and although female HGV driver numbers are increasing, they still only account for 0.7% of the UK’s qualified HGV drivers.

But what are businesses missing out on?  Having a mix of both men and women brings many benefits including alternative thinking, increased productivity, reliability, and retention – things most businesses would be aiming to attain.

So what is needed to cut through the barriers women face?

Some ideas include operating flexible shift patterns, workplace childcare facilities, and offering the same pay rates irrespective of gender for both part-time and full-time workers.  If these initiatives are embraced by the industry, it will attract more female talent, and if career development is supported for everyone, then we all benefit.

One such body trying to address this issue is Women in Cold Chain (WiCC), who held their awards in September 2023.  They aim to encourage female school leavers, university graduates, and women from other industry sectors to consider a career in the temperature-controlled storage and distribution industry, which traditionally is male dominated.

One attendee at the awards event said: “The speakers imparted their experience that anything’s possible, and so many women talked about their own experiences of working within a male dominated environment that I too had experienced such as service engineers talking to the ‘man’ behind you as if you wouldn’t know what they were talking about, drivers talking over or past you, your opinion or point of view not being heard in meetings, and people generally presuming because you are female you can’t manage transport!

“I do believe that there are a lot of men that just don’t realise the challenges women face, and they need to hear about it firsthand to understand, and for them then to support women in their chosen profession, no matter what that might be.”

So let’s not overlook this huge talent pool when recruiting into our industry, and take advantage of the gains of having a diverse, skilled and happy workforce.

If you’re thinking of a change of career, or just starting out, then see how we can help you, with our range of Forklift Courses

LPG Fuel Safety Alert

LPG Fuel Safety Alert

LPG Fuel Safety Alert

If you have LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) powered forklift trucks in your operations, then you need to be aware that there is a currently ongoing safety concern with the fuel in the UK.

The HSE are currently investigating the problems, which seem to occur when starting the trucks and may be linked to contaminated fuel entering the UK.

The UK Material Handling Association has recently updated its Safety Alert addressing these concerns.  For more information about the problem please visit https://ukmha.org.uk/ukmha-releases-lpg-safety-alert/

Please note this is an ongoing situation and therefore it continues to pose a risk to all LPG fueled trucks, irrespective of manufacturer.   If you have any problems starting an LPG truck, then download the safety advice brochure for the best course of action, for your operators and engineers.

We will keep you updated on this issue as more updates become available.

Awards Update

So, it’s officially the end of awards season, and we were so proud to be finalists in 2 awards this year.

We were finalists in the 2023 South West Business Masters Awards, in the category of “Community impact”.

We were delighted to attend the awards dinner in Bristol on Thursday 9th November at the Bristol Harbour Hotel, and although we didn’t win, we were honoured to be in the same shortlist as SWIG Finance, a fantastic not-for-profit company providing loans to South West SMEs and start-ups.  A worthy winner.

We also met some lovely people from Lush Cosmetics and RAW Food and Drink PR who were on our table, and were so happy to cheer one of our customers, Limbs and Things, as they celebrated their wins on the night, including Margot Cooper, their founder being named as South West Business Ambassador.

We were also finalists at the SME National Business Awards, in the category “Positive Impact”.  We were delighted to attend the awards dinner at the iconic Wembley Stadium on the evening of Friday 1st December 2023, which was a fantastic event.

This year was a record number of entries into the SME National Business Awards, so reaching the finals was no easy feat!  Given our humble stature, we were again honoured to be considered in the same category as ACF Technologies UK, who were the eventual worthy winners.

It’s been an incredible year for us, and we’ve been very fortunate to celebrate our achievements with such a lovely group of like-minded companies and friendly people.

Here’s to 2024, and fingers crossed it’s equally as exciting!
