Did you know that there are different types of fire extinguishers, and each type is designed to extinguish specific classes of fires? They can be confusing, so we’ve put together a handy guide to the main five types of fire extinguishers here in the UK and the types of fires they are designed to extinguish.
- Water fire extinguishers: Safe to use on ordinary combustible fires (such as wood, paper, textiles etc).
- Powder fire extinguishers: Safe to use on ordinary combustible fires, plus flammable liquid fires (such as gasoline, oil, or grease), gaseous fires and electrical fires (such as motors, appliances, or tools).
- CO2 fire extinguishers: Safe to use on flammable liquid fires and electrical fires.
- Foam fire extinguishers: Safe to use on ordinary combustibles fires and flammable liquid fires.
- Fire Blanket: Used to smother files, these are safe to use for chip pan, fryer and waste bin fires. They are also designed to wrap around someone whose clothes are burning.
- Wet Chemical fire extinguishers: Safe to use on ordinary combustibles fires, plus extinguishing fires involving cooking oils and fats, such as those in commercial kitchens.
It is important to use the right type of fire extinguisher for the type of fire you are dealing with, as using the wrong type can be ineffective or even dangerous. If you are unsure about what type of fire extinguisher to use, it is best to evacuate the area and call the fire department for assistance.
If you’d like to understand what to do in a fire, or if you have specific fire wardens / marshal obligations, our QA Level 2 Award in Fire Safety (RFQ) could be the course you need. We teach you an understanding of fire safety management at work and the specific roles and responsibilities related to fire safety in the workplace.

It’s always great to learn new skills, and learning First Aid is particularly rewarding, especially if you go onto use those skills in a real-life emergency. But it’s also an impressive skill for you personally and can really benefit your career. An Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course can be beneficial in several ways:
- Enhanced skills: With an EFAW course, you’ll learn valuable skills that can be applied in emergency situations. This can make you a valuable asset to your employer, especially if you work in an industry where accidents or injuries are common
- Professional development: Many employers look favorably upon employees who take the initiative to improve their skills and knowledge. Completing an EFAW course demonstrates your commitment to professional development and may enhance your career prospects
- Compliance: Some jobs, especially those in high-risk industries such as construction or manufacturing, require employees to have a certain level of first aid training. By completing an EFAW course, you may be meeting this requirement and making yourself a more attractive candidate for employment
- Personal development: Learning how to provide first aid can also be personally fulfilling. It can give you a sense of confidence and accomplishment and may even inspire you to pursue further training or volunteer work in this area
Overall, an EFAW course can help you develop valuable skills, demonstrate your commitment to professional development, and make you a more attractive candidate for certain jobs.
Enhance your skills by booking on our next EFAW course – running on 14th April 2023.

Five years ago, on 12th March 2018, we proudly completed our very first training courses, a Counterbalance and Reach truck refresher for one person. Since then, we’ve gone on to help a further 504 people achieve another 709 certificates in a huge variety of courses, across the regulated training spectrum!
We’ve helped 67 businesses and charities ensure they are meeting their legal obligations and we’ve helped 171 private individuals gain new certificates and keep their own certification and qualifications up to date.
But more than that, we hope we’ve made a real difference along the way. By working closely with some charities and agencies, we’ve been able to help people who have found themselves in a tough spot and just need a little help to lift them back up.
It’s been an absolute pleasure and a privilege working alongside the people we’ve worked with over the last five years, and we hope that if you’ve attended a course with us, we’ve been able to make your working life just that little bit more enjoyable, or we’ve played our part in giving you a helping hand just when you needed it.
