National Forklift Safety Day

We’re proud to be supporting the UKMHA’s National Forklift Safety Day 2024.

Starting on the 11th of June, National Forklift Safety Day 2024 continues to raise awareness about the safe use of material handling equipment.

The theme for their campaign this year is ‘Prevent – Manage – Learn‘, a concise message that conveys the UKMHA’s ambition to educate people on what to do before, during and after a forklift incident.

Throughout the year, they’ll be focusing on the 7 stages of an incident cycle, releasing information and useful content each month, starting with Prepare, which focuses on the actions you can take to reduce the chance of incidents becoming accidents.

This is something Key Performance Training aims to do with every course we deliver. Better training leads to safer material handling operations, so make sure your staff are properly trained with our high quality, accredited training courses

Whether you are a forklift operator, manager, or someone involved in the industry, take part in this important initiative as we all aim to make everyday Forklift Safety Day.

Company and director sentenced after worker died

A company director has appeared in court on 6th March 2024 following the tragic death of an employee at Graniteland Limited in the West Midlands on 30th November 2020.

Robert Czachracz was crushed by two granite slabs while unpacking and moving the slabs onto storage racks, using an overhead crane, at the company’s Lyde Green site in Halesowen.

Two of the slabs, each weighing 250kg, fell and crushed Mr Czachracz against a forklift truck while he was operating the crane’s handheld pendant control.

He died at the scene despite desperate attempts from bystanders at nearby businesses and the emergency services to save him.

Staff training and safe systems were not implemented

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Graniteland Limited and its director, Mr Shu Lai Li, failed to implement staff training or develop safe systems of work for the unloading, loading and handling of concrete slabs.

There was no evidence that employees had received training in the safe operation of machinery, including the overhead crane. The overhead crane and forklift truck had also not been thoroughly examined, as required by law, and that webbing slings, that could have been used during the unpacking process, were damaged.

Graniteland Limited pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The company was fined £18,000 and ordered to pay £4,196.03 in costs at Dudley Magistrates’ Court on 6 March 2024.

Mr Shu Lai Li, of Lyde Green, Halesowen, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 37(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. He was ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and pay £4,043.42 in costs at Dudley Magistrates’ Court on 6 March 2024.

HSE inspector Mahesh Mahey said: “This was an entirely preventable accident. The risks of lifting and moving granite slabs were obvious yet could have been controlled by relatively simple and inexpensive measures. The company and director failed to adequately control lifting operations which resulted in an employee needlessly and tragically losing his life.”

It is your legal responsibility to ensure that your staff have received appropriate training before they operate any material handling equipment (MHE), and we can help you with this. To view our range of forklift truck training courses, please click here.

Our passion is to work with companies in the MHE industry to ensure high standards of operations to reduce accidents and ultimately make our workplaces safer. Our thoughts are with Mr Czachracz’s family.

Mental Health Awareness Week

We’ve been supporting the UK Mental Health Foundation’s “Mental Health Awareness Week” this week. This year’s theme is “Movement: Moving more for our mental health”, so we’ve all been getting in the spirit of things and trying to move more!

We’ve all had a lot of fun, and it has been great to break up the day with a little moving around.  It’s so easy to get stuck sitting for long periods of time during the working day, so it’s been great to switch things up, get the adrenaline pumping and the oxygen flowing!

To see some of the pictures from our fantastic team joining in, please pop to our Linkedin page – we hope you can also share some of your efforts with us too!

We support this amazing charity throughout the year by selling their Green ribbon pin badges in centre, and we also donate one to anyone who attends a Mental Health First Aid or Mental Health Awareness course with us.  For more information about our Mental Health courses, please click here.

Thank you to the UK Mental Health Foundation for all the brilliant work that they do.  We can’t wait to see what they come up with for next year’s challenge!

Mental Health Awareness Week

Next week is the UK Mental Health Foundation’s “Mental Health Awareness Week”, running from Monday 13th – Friday 17th May!  This year’s theme is “Movement: Moving more for our mental health”.

Movement is important for our mental health, but so many of us struggle to move enough.  In fact, 36% of UK adults say that they find it challenging to find the time for physical activity.

We know there are many different reasons for this, so this week they want to help people to find moments for movement in their daily routines.  Here are some great, simple tips for wellbeing-boosting activities that don’t take a lot of time to do:

  • Going for a walk in your neighbourhood,
  • Putting on your favourite music and dancing around the living room,
  • Chair exercises when you’re watching television
  • Use the time you spend waiting to move more – when you’re waiting for the kettle to boil; for your kids to come out of school; or for a bus to arrive

These moments will all add up and help towards improving our state of mind.

Get more tips from the Mental Health Foundation: mentalhealth.org.uk/movement-tips

We’ll be joining in ourselves by pledging to hold our internal meetings whilst walking, instead of sitting, some will walk to work instead of driving, and we’ll also doing some miles on the work’s exercise bike during lunch breaks.   We’ll post some pictures on our social media channels in the coming weeks, so hope you can also share some of your efforts with us.

We support this amazing charity throughout the year by selling their Green ribbon pin badges in centre, and we also donate one to anyone who attends a Mental Health First Aid or Mental Health Awareness course with us.  For more information about our Mental Health courses, please click here.

Retain forklift operators with non-transferable certificates

Retain forklift operators with non-transferable certificates

RTITB Accreditation

Retain forklift operators with

non-transferable certificates

The demand for trained operators is currently greater than the number of candidates available. This makes retaining trained materials handling equipment (MHE) operators a priority.

The recruitment marketplace is competitive, and this has led some companies to become reluctant to invest in accredited lift truck operator training. Not because they don’t want high standards in their team, but because operators could use that qualification to take on a role with another employer.

First Aid Icon

To tackle this, some companies are choosing to run their own in-house forklift operator training. This does not have national recognition or the backing of an independent accrediting body and is therefore unlikely to be recognised by a competitor that is looking to recruit lift truck operators.

However, there is a better alternative!

As an RTITB Accredited Partner, we do not have to offer national, transferable certificates.  We have the option to provide non-transferable RTITB certificates. These forklift operator certificates can be limited, for example, for use only with a specific company or site.

This approach can offer a wide range of benefits.

Validation and Compliance

One big advantage of non-transferable training certificates lies in the assurance of compliance. These lift truck operator training certificates come with independent quality assurance through RTITB Accreditation. This shows that the training, examination, and records adhere to specific standards. And most importantly, that the training delivered has complied with relevant guidance, such as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) ACoP L117 (Approved Code of Practice for Rider-operated lift trucks).

This external validation gives peace of mind, especially if a lift truck incident occurs.

Companies issuing RTITB accredited certificates can be confident that their workforce has the necessary skills and knowledge, as well as meet industry standards. It also standardises the quality of training across the whole company whilst showing that your company is committed to maintaining high standards.

To find out more about why choosing accredited training is the best approach, please click here.

Retain operators and attract talent

Non-transferable certificates can play a pivotal role in retaining skilled forklift operators. Not only because employees cannot take their operator certificate elsewhere, but also because employees are more likely to stay with a company that invests in their professional growth. Showing an employee that you have invested in a recognised, independent qualification often holds more weight than an internal training program.

Likewise, offering RTITB accredited training can be a powerful tool for attracting talent. Potential hires will be drawn to employers who can show they prioritise quality training and that they are willing to invest in this for their team.

Keeping control

Maintaining control is crucial for employers to safeguard their training investments. With non-transferable certificates, lift truck operators cannot request their certificates without explicit employer permission. This prevents any unauthorised use to gain employment elsewhere. Operators who receive non-transferable certificates are also not listed for public search on RTITB’s national operator register website.

So talk to us today about non-transferable certificates and see how we can help you retain your talent and investment.
