World Mental Health Day 2024

Did you know that it’s World Mental Health Day on Thursday 10th October? This day is about raising awareness and funds to drive positive change for everyone’s mental health.

The theme for 2024, set by the World Federation of Mental Health (WFMH), is ‘It’s time to prioritise mental health in the workplace’ – something we’ve been championing for some time now.

The theme this year highlights the importance of addressing mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, for the benefit of people, organisations, and communities.

Work can have a huge impact on our mental health. It can be good for our mental health, giving us a sense of purpose, boosting our self-worth, and providing opportunities to connect with others. But it can also be a source of stress and anxiety and contribute to developing or worsening mental health problems.

Did you know?

  • 15% of UK workers are estimated to have an existing mental health condition
  • 875,000 workers suffered from work-related stress, depression and anxiety in 2022/23
  • The 5th most common reason for sickness absence in 2022 was mental health.

Many people spend a lot of their time working, whether that’s in the community, in an office, a workshop, at home, or many other workplaces.

That’s why it’s so important that our workplace supports our mental health, helping us get the mental health benefits of work while reducing the negative impact.

But what is a mentally healthy workplace?

There are many things that contribute to a mentally healthy workplace, from providing staff training on mental health to tackling discrimination and bullying. Importantly, a mentally healthy workplace supports open conversations about mental health.

While talking about mental health in the workplace has become more common, many people still face stigma when it comes to severe mental health problems.

This means there’s more work to be done to tackle mental health stigma in the workplace.

If you want to make your workplace a healthier place for staff, or if you want to gain the key skills to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis, then please book with us on our next Mental Health First Aid Course, which is running on Friday 25th October.

Please see our course information here.

For every booking, we will support the UK Mental Health Foundation with their fundraising efforts and will donate Mental Health First Aider pin badges to everyone who attends our next Mental Health First Aid Course.  We’ll also donate 10% of that course’s bookings to the UK Mental Health Foundation.

There are things we can all do to help create a mentally healthy workplace that supports open conversations. We can all learn how to confidently talk about mental health with our colleagues and make a difference.

Haulage firm fined after forklift operator died

Haulage firm fined after forklift operator died

A haulage firm from Oldham have been fined in excess of £85,000 after a forklift operator was killed whilst loading a heavy goods vehicle (HGV).

Ian Dawson, 60, from Rochdale, was loading pallets onto an HGV at Chorlton Express Transport Ltd on 19th November 2020.  Whilst he was doing this, the HGV drove forward, which then impacted the forklift truck, causing it to overturn.

Mr Dawson was unfortunately not wearing his seat belt and was therefore trapped underneath the vehicle.  He sadly later died from his injuries.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) carried out an investigation and found that Chorlton Express Transport Limited of Meek Street in Oldham, had failed to put sufficient safe systems of work in place regarding vehicle movements, or to ensure that all forklift truck operators were compelled to wear seat belts.

The court heard that, had Mr Dawson been wearing a seat belt, it is highly likely that this would have saved his life.

The company pleaded guilty to breaching regulation 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. They were fined £86,710 and was ordered to pay £5,903 costs at a hearing at Manchester Magistrates Court on 17 April 2024.

After the hearing HSE inspector Jane Carroll said: “The failures of this company have left a family without the man they loved.  The importance of wearing seatbelts cannot be stressed enough. The failures meant the company exposed employees, and others, to the risk of being struck or caught by workplace vehicles.

“All work settings that use a forklift truck to load or unload goods, need to consider the risks arising from their use, and implement adequate measures to ensure the safety of those involved in these activities.”

Have your forklift operators been trained in the correct and safe way to operate their vehicles?  Would you be confident that your operators are all wearing seat belts today?

The easiest ways to avoid these tragic incidents is to ensure that your forklift operators are properly trained and your supervisors understand how to manage forklift operations safely.

We can help you with our high quality accredited training courses, ranging from Forklift driving courses to our online course “Managing & Supervising Materials Handling Equipment (MHE) Operations” – please click here to see our full range.

National Forklift Safety Day

We’re proud to be supporting the UKMHA’s National Forklift Safety Day 2024.

Starting on the 11th of June, National Forklift Safety Day 2024 continues to raise awareness about the safe use of material handling equipment.

The theme for their campaign this year is ‘Prevent – Manage – Learn‘, a concise message that conveys the UKMHA’s ambition to educate people on what to do before, during and after a forklift incident.

Throughout the year, they’ll be focusing on the 7 stages of an incident cycle, releasing information and useful content each month, starting with Prepare, which focuses on the actions you can take to reduce the chance of incidents becoming accidents.

This is something Key Performance Training aims to do with every course we deliver. Better training leads to safer material handling operations, so make sure your staff are properly trained with our high quality, accredited training courses

Whether you are a forklift operator, manager, or someone involved in the industry, take part in this important initiative as we all aim to make everyday Forklift Safety Day.

Contact us on 01793 975353 or rachel.gearon@keyperformancetraining.co.uk for more information about how we can help or to book your course today.

Company and director sentenced after worker died

A company director has appeared in court on 6th March 2024 following the tragic death of an employee at Graniteland Limited in the West Midlands on 30th November 2020.

Robert Czachracz was crushed by two granite slabs while unpacking and moving the slabs onto storage racks, using an overhead crane, at the company’s Lyde Green site in Halesowen.

Two of the slabs, each weighing 250kg, fell and crushed Mr Czachracz against a forklift truck while he was operating the crane’s handheld pendant control.

He died at the scene despite desperate attempts from bystanders at nearby businesses and the emergency services to save him.

Staff training and safe systems were not implemented

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Graniteland Limited and its director, Mr Shu Lai Li, failed to implement staff training or develop safe systems of work for the unloading, loading and handling of concrete slabs.

There was no evidence that employees had received training in the safe operation of machinery, including the overhead crane. The overhead crane and forklift truck had also not been thoroughly examined, as required by law, and that webbing slings, that could have been used during the unpacking process, were damaged.

Graniteland Limited pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The company was fined £18,000 and ordered to pay £4,196.03 in costs at Dudley Magistrates’ Court on 6 March 2024.

Mr Shu Lai Li, of Lyde Green, Halesowen, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 37(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. He was ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and pay £4,043.42 in costs at Dudley Magistrates’ Court on 6 March 2024.

HSE inspector Mahesh Mahey said: “This was an entirely preventable accident. The risks of lifting and moving granite slabs were obvious yet could have been controlled by relatively simple and inexpensive measures. The company and director failed to adequately control lifting operations which resulted in an employee needlessly and tragically losing his life.”

It is your legal responsibility to ensure that your staff have received appropriate training before they operate any material handling equipment (MHE), and we can help you with this. To view our range of forklift truck training courses, please click here.

Our passion is to work with companies in the MHE industry to ensure high standards of operations to reduce accidents and ultimately make our workplaces safer. Our thoughts are with Mr Czachracz’s family.
